I'm visiting my sis in SF for a few days. The city is so pretty, and the air is so clean! I just wish the weather was warmer and less rainy. I'm hoping to stop by the Japanese cherry blossom festival at Japantown. Then we'llhead to Union Square and get some tea at Samovar. Depending on how tired we are we'll pass through Chinatown and get treats at Little Italy's Stellas bakery. :) It'll be a belated birthday celebration for Jen.

The weather was excellent today. Sunny and warm with just a slight breeze. I'm sitting at my desk after the workday, and I can hear my wind-chime ring. It's the prettiest sounding chime.

I'll be hosting the customer service manager of our New York branch tomorrow. I've heard great things about her, so I'm looking forward to meeting her. I'll tour her around the factory, talk about our projects, and hopefully exchange some best practices.

It's a new decade. I counted down with Jen and Jeff in San Francisco. We celebrated with some champagne, crackers, cheese and prosciutto. There were fireworks around the city that we could see from their apartment. My family called to greet us soon after midnight, and it was nice to hear about everyone's new year's resolutions. Mine is to lose 10 lbs by working out every T/Th. :)

It was nice to hear his voice again.

Today I made strawberry muffins, and they turned out pretty well. I doctored the recipe with some vanilla and cinnamon. I used fresh strawberries from Farmer's Market, so they're extra tasty. I'm going to bring them to work tomorrow. Every Monday my coworkers take turns making lunch, and I provide the dessert. :)

It's labor day. Hooray, I get it off. I went shopping for my siblings and mom. Still need to find something for my dad. I can't wait to go home and share all my pasalubong with them. :D

My brother is moving here next year. It's pretty sure. The timing's good 'cause I don't think my dad can afford to pay for his next trimester anyway. Things are really tight back home. :( My mom asked me to play Santa this year and said they'd try to pay me back... but I know they can't and I'm not expecting them to. So I still have a lot more shopping to do. It's not quite in my spending comfort zone, but I haven't been home in 2 years, and I don't know when I'll see them next... so I see it as an investment in our relationship. I do enjoy shopping for them anyway. I just know I'll hate my credit card bill this month. :s No worries, I'll still pay it full... just won't be able to save my usual monthly amount.

Can I just say, I am relieved that it's the weekend? This week was so busy. The fiscal year is ending soon, and it sure feels that way. I have so much due in October, and I keep getting assigned more special projects to research cost savings.

I'm on my last day of SharePoint training. Here are some neat things I've learned:

A Web Application is one database that can house different Site Collections

It is advisable to have separate site collections for each department, so you can specify user groups and permissions easily

You can define permissions on 4 different levels:
1. Site Collection
2. Site
3. Library
4. Item

Content types - specific documents can have different approval workflows

You can block certain file types to prevent huge uploads

You can check in and check out documents to prevent people from editing the same thing at once

Outlook attachments can be sent as shared attachments in a document workspace

There are 3 main user types, but MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server) allows 12 different types:
1. Members
2. Owners
3. Visitors

You can use the site designer to modify sites easily, similar to Frontpage and Dreamweaver

You can build versions of one page in different languages with the site translator

I just got an informational call from Kaiser, advising me to shut my windows and turn the air conditioning on, because of the fires around Los Angeles. I haven't noticed a change in the air quality... I just walked across the street to drop off my dry cleaning, and everything was fine. It's still nice of them to share that information though.

SharePoint Training and Skype Issues

Today I started my first day of remote training for SharePoint site adminstration. I am enjoying the class so far. QSLive is providing the training, and they are very professional. They set me up with a remote server and Citrix interactive desktop. It's neat being exposed to new technology. Citrix is especially fun. It's cool to know that my company is switching to that technology in the next year, and I already have some experience with it.

I have been phoning into the conference via Skype "unlimited". However, their "unlimited" isn't actually such. Apparently, they have a 6-hour per day connectivity limit. Of course they don't advertise that on their site, until you dig for it. I'm pretty disappointed. I purchased a month's worth of their Worldwide plan, only to learn that the Philippines isn't included in it. What a scam! That was the only country outside the US that I cared to phone.

I asked Skype to refund me the $10 more I spent to obtain the worldwide connection in Skype credits, as all I am really able to use is the US connection (which is $10 less). I hope they do. I could use that credit to call the Philippines.

Now, excitement. Think I got my crying out of the way.

Lunch with the coworkers was fun. My coworker's house is new, and it's obvious. There were no photos or paintings on the walls. I commented on that. I'm sure he and his wife will have stuff up in no time. They still have one empty room and another room with bunk beds. For future kids, perhaps? I'm happy for them. They're not in the best location, but they have a nice spacious home that's 20 minutes from where I work. They bought at the right time (economic crisis) - before inflation hits. Prices will surely go up in the next few years because of it.

Wish I had more saved up to at least put $15K towards a condo. Even if I wouldn't live there long-term, it would be a good investment if I bought it while the market was down. I have started saving $550 a month. In 12 months, that will bring me to $6600. Adding that to my current savings ~$5300, that would put me close to $12,000. I hope I can keep up the savings trend. I need to watch my spending closely. I have been bringing lunch to work more often to save a bit. I recently bought a new computer, but I think it was a good investment. I can write it off as a deduction come tax time. Ooh, I hope I get a good tax refund in 2010. Maybe if the market hasn't quite recovered yet, I will be able to place a down on a home in the next year or two. We'll see!

My family had a new home, and we were just moving in. There was enough space for all of us. I was debating which bed I wanted in which room. I settled on one in the basement which was like a little studio. Jen and Cath had beds there too, and we had our own little garden area with lots of room for plants in pots. I think the house was near the beach. But at the same time the house was also attached to a mall that you could get to through an underground passage.

But I do have good news. I get to take a 3-day class on SharePoint site administration. The sister company to my company is offering to pay for my training. It's neat that they want to invest in me like that. The class is in Gardena, though. A bit of a drive. So I am going to take it remotely instead, in the comfort of my own home.

Fire and Tea

Apparently I have nightmares about fire when I eat brownies right before bed. In this dream, there was a fire near my house/work, but no one was asking us to evacuate yet. The fire was about 2 blocks away. I was following the news and making tea. Then I noticed that it was hard to put the fire out underneath the tea pot, probably because of a higher Oxygen content in the air due to the nearby fire (Is that logical?). I had to pour water from the teapot to put out the fire. Then I looked for my roommate or coworkers to get them to evacuate early with me, but our leader (?) was upstairs and busy watching TV/didn't want to go.

Well, it worked out that I woke up from the nightmare. I had to brush my teeth anyway.

Also noticed that Licia left the light on in the living room, which I shut.

I woke up to the sound of sirens. Still don't know where they were headed, but it matters little to me now, because the noise is gone. I didn't sleep particularly well last night. I would have slept better if I had someone to cuddle with. There are nights when I want to be on the inside. I may seem tough, but at the end of the day, I just want to be held sometimes.

I made an egg sandwich for breakfast and had it with a cup of milk. I will get ready for work soon. Today the branch managers are onsite at headquarters, and I need to be on my best behavior.

Farmer's Market strawberries are delightfully juicy. It's too bad they go bad within days. I should learn how to bake with them to make them last... I could make strawberry muffins or something.

It has been really warm here lately, but I prefer it over cold weather. It's nice being able to lounge around in shorts and have the windows open, so I can hear my wind chime.

I bought a lavender plant at the farmer's market a couple weeks back, and it's alive but looks pretty dry. I've been trying to water it daily, so that should help.

I dreamt that Licia and I had a huge back yard with a pool, and she and her bf had decorated the whole area with day beds on the sides of the pool. They painted the walls too. I could go swim as I pleased, but there were lots of people using the pool too for some reason. Instead of an apartment, we had a big house, with a lobby much like a hotel. Haha.

It's disheartening when I think of all the things I have to pay for, and how little I get to save from my monthly paycheck. After taxes, 401K and health care costs, I take home about $3800/mo.

Rent (~$1K/mo.)
School loans ~300/mo.
Car loan (~340/mo.)
Car + renters insurance ~250/mo.
Groceries ~$100
Electricity, Water, Trash ~$30/mo.
Internet ~$20/mo.
Money for my siblings $100/mo.

Total estimate: $2140/mo. standard expenses

I have roughly $1660 left to spend on other stuff or save. I do save $550/mo, but that only amounts to $6K a year. I need to look more closely at where the rest of the $1660 goes to. I know at least $100 goes to eating out, and probably $200 to various expenses (clothing/shoes/entertainment). I should try to save more than $550 if I can.

My friend just started working, and she has no loans and no rent to pay (lives with her parents). I wouldn't be surprised if she can afford to put a down on a condo/house before me.

Scrapbooking

My coworker told me about a nice scrapbooking shop nearby work. That got me thinking... I like scrapbooking, but what the heck would I scrapbook? I do have pieces of various memories, but they're mostly from times I spent with my ex. I could scrapbook my last vacation to SF with Jen, but somehow I know I wouldn't be inspired to put my time into that. Maybe after my trip to the Philippines I can make a scrapbook... but then it would be easier to share with my family in a digital scrapbook instead. A handmade book would be more personal though. Hmm, the only person I ever made a handmade scrapbook for was my old best friend, Reg. Speaking of whom, I'm going to meet up with her when I go home. It has been a while since we were on speaking terms... Guess we'll see how the meet-up goes.

The Cowboy Bebop song just started playing on my stereo. It's jazzy and pretty. Lying in my dimly lit room listening to music after a long day of work is such a nice reward. Yes, I know that sentence was not grammatically correct.

Curry at Sawtelle and Sake

I met up with Bettina for lunch at Hurry Curry. We hadn't seen each other in over a year, so it was nice to catch up. It's hard to believe we've been out of school for as long as we have. Time flies in the workplace.

I bought myself a sake set. It's light green and pretty. I'll upload a pic of it later, along with a pic of my new owl figurine couple. I plan to enjoy the sake tomorrow afternoon with some tilapia and wild rice. :) The owls are going on my work desk to keep my company.

I want to buy a hummingbird feeder. Since I have nowhere to hang one, this window version would be perfect. I read up on it, and its red color attracts hummingbirds, and it has an ant moat to prevent ants from getting to the sugar water. I saw a hummingbird outside my window once before, so hopefully this would attract more (and not bees).

My boss said he doesn't care if I dress casual or not, but that it would be good to dress up when I have meetings with other higher ups. That's so I can stay on their radar for future growth. Sounds good to me. I could use another pair of khakis and definitely more button-down tops. I bought a pair of pumps over the weekend, and it was nice to wear 'em to work this week. Made me feel more professional, heh. I still wear flats for the most part, though. They're more comfortable.

Maybe I'll drive to Griffith. It has been a while.

Relaxation

I took a soak in the hot spa by the pool yesterday. It was nice to take advantage of my apartment's amenities for a change. The weather was perfect for it... Just cool enough but not too cool. I only stayed 10 minutes, but it was enough to put my mind at ease.

Today I'm not doing as well. I can't believe it's only Tuesday. At least this week is a short one, 'cause I get Friday off in honor of Independence Day. I asked Ashley if she'd like to try seeing fireworks if she doesn't already have plans. She gave me a wish-washy answer, so that's probably a no. But whatever. I can drive up to Mullhulland and look over the hill. I'm a bit afraid of driving up there though. It's pretty steep. :c Maybe I'll just drive around in general. I should buy some Asti/sweet wine or something.

Today felt very summery. I went to the Getty with my roommate (Licia) and her mom and lil' bro. The gardens were pretty, but the view of LA was smoggy. It's a shame. Still, it was nice to get out and enjoy the museum again. We didn't go through the indoor exhibits, 'cause we had to get back for lunch. Licia's mom made a delicious korean barbeque lunch with potato pancakes and sticky rice. Mmm!

On a cheerier note than my last post, my friend/coworker Ashley and I went to Disneyland's California Adventure. The drive to Anaheim wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We took 57 instead of the 5, which may have helped 'cause 2 lanes of the 5 were closed. Then we parked 5 min away from Disney and walked there. The hotel we parked at had a ticket center, so we skipped the long lines at the park for a small convenience fee. Worth it in my opinion! We got in early and got to hit all the rides we wanted... Tower of Terror (elevator), California Screamin' (roller coaster), some water ride, etc...

Cal Adventure does not compare to the Magic Kingdom, but it was still fun.

I just gave up... on us... on everything we stood for. I was a coward, and there is no redeeming myself.

It's going to be a bit crazy transitioning, because the guy I'm replacing will also be starting a new position, so he may not necessarily have time to train me. At the same time, I'll have to train my replacement. Meep!

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is my ex's 30th birthday. I don't feel comfortable greeting him. We haven't talked or anything since the break-up about a month ago. He may not want to hear from me, and I would not want to ruin his birthday any more than I probably already have. We were supposed to spend the day together...

No use crying over spilled milk I guess. I did send him a postcard a week or so ago saying that maybe once we're past the pain we can start communicating again. I leave it up to him, and I would understand if he wouldn't care to do so.

Jen and I are driving to Big Sur tomorrow. I hope we will survive the long road trip. We'll be staying at the Big Sur River Inn, which will hopefully be as cozy as it looks on their website. Jen has never seen Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey, so I am looking forward to showing them off (though I haven't seen much of Carmel myself).

The last time I was in Big Sur was with my ex, so hopefully I won't get hung up on that and enjoy the beautiful scenery regardless.

I really wish I didn't end things the way I did, but I couldn't think of any other way we could have successfully broken up with each other. I had to do it. Our relationship just wasn't healthy. I was getting depressed. I knew he didn't have it in him to end it, so I did.

On a lighter note, Jen and I had awesome crab for dinner today at South Seafood Village (something like that) with her friend/coworker, Tamira. It was a bit strange for us to eat something that we had seen alive right before, but I'm not going to go all vegan because of it.

Tomorrow will be fun. I have two days of vacation left before diving back into the rush of work. June is going to be a busy month. I already have a last-minute presentation to do this coming Wednesday (assigned right before I went on vacation), and I only have 2 days to prepare for it. *holds her breath*

SF Vacation

I'm in SF for a week, and I'm staying with my sister Jen and her boyfriend Jeff. They share a spacious apartment on Cathedral Hill, and the view from their living room is awesome. I wish I could wake up to a view like this everyday. My place in Studio City has a view of some mountains in the distance, but it does not compare.

Today we went to Sausalito and Japantown. Yesterday, I joined my uncle and his family in-law on a day trip to Napa. We stopped at Domaine Carneros and V. Sattui, which had my favorite Gamay Rouge wine. I picked up a couple of bottles to share with Jen and Jeff. Here are some pics of the highlights...

My coworker Felix invited me to his friend May's birthday bash at a club called Mood. It was a really cute and exclusive place. He brought along his roomie Rich and Rich's buddy Reed. I had never done the club scene before, but it wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be. I was able to keep up with the dancing, and I enjoyed some sake bombs at Koji Sushi with the guys before hitting the club.

This week went by rather quickly. I was in San Francisco on Monday, visiting my sister for four days. She introduced me to her adorable Italian greyhound pup, Moxie. We walked him a couple times through Japantown to the Filmore, where we stopped for hot chocolate at "Bittersweet." It was nice to spend time with Jen. I miss living in the same city as her. At least I have a week-long vacation coming up, where I'll be visiting her again.

I had originally planned to go to Florida for two weeks, but that didn't go as planned. My boyfriend and I broke up, after 6 years of roughing out long-distance. I think the more time we spent in person, the more we realized our differences, some of which could not be overcome.

I don't think I'll date again for a long time, if at all. He was a large part of my life, despite the distance, and I am honestly scared of the road ahead. The distance was killing me though. It's hard enough being separated from my family, who are all the way in the Philippines. To be separated from a lover was depressing. We had some awesome times together, which I will always hold dear.

Now I'm trying to move on, but it is not at all easy. He has deleted me from IM and Facebook. I wish we could have parted as friends, but I don't think that was possible without leaving room for being sucked back into the long-distance relationship.

No longer in Denial

I must confess. I am a workaholic. It finally hit me, when half my department was relocated from Los Angeles to Tennessee this past month. I was left with less work, and the boredom drove me nuts! I found myself asking people from other departments if they needed help with projects, and oh, the projects flooded in. There are 6 projects on my plate now, and while I've reached the point of slight uneasiness, I much prefer this feeling to having too much free time.

So that's an intro to me. I know there are other workaholics out there. Speak!
